That name refers to a statement by Duke John II who wanted to thank the people of Lier for their services in the fight against the people of Mechelen. The townspeople received a gift from the duke, they could choose between a cattle market and a university.

Because cattle trade was important and because only one such market was allowed per region, Lier chose this, to which the duke responded "Oh, those sheep heads". But the cattle market did lead to the beginning of the city's economic prosperity. The university was then founded in Leuven.
